READ TO FEED!

Kathy Rolfes, teacher librarian, and Molly Meierhoff, reading specialist,  were very excited to launch Heifer International's Read to Feed program to our Mann kids  today.  This program will be the first of our initiatives this year to introduce and reinforce our understanding of the plight of those less fortunate than us while aligning with certain curriculum goals.  Through this reading  program, kids will collect pledges and find ways to collect funds (like book swaps) to benefit Heifer International which gives animals to communities in dire need.  Each grade will learn of a country that Heifer supports (China, Armenia, Rwanda, USA) and lesson plans are available for all teachers and in the media center to support learning about these various communities.  We will also learn about the animals that Heifer donates and how they are used to help the communities to which they are sent (bees/honey).  Kids will be reading and learning about how animals help communities  through the end of October.  We will impress upon the kids that even by reading and not financially supporting the program, they are contributing by  learning about a program that helps others and the communities that it supports.. Look for a information packed to come home with you child!  To learn more about this initiative, please visit www.readtofeed.org.
